Let me get this one in before Nats catches me.
1ST buck: Picked up one of my favorite hunting buddies at school early yesterday. My 9 year old granddaughter and I headed to the hunting house. She already said she would shoot the muzzleloader. We went to her favorite stand "the Sticker Stand". We got up about 2:50 pm or so, at 3:20 an 8 pointer came out to the feeder. She waited, rested the muzzleloader on the rail, when she had the shot, she squeezed off. The Hornady sabot struck true, right behind the shoulder. He ran about 10 yards. My granddaughter was pumped...so excited. She ain't afraid to get her hands dirty either.
So this morning we traded out the muzzleloader for her .243 Remington 700. Went back to the "Sticker Stand". Saw a doe and a yearling, then about 7:45 we saw a huge 8 point chocolate antlered buck. He was massive and probably the best deer I have seen on my lease in 7 years. I got my granddaughter up out of the floor where she was covered up, trying to stay warm, and she glassed him with the binoculars. He never came out to the feeder, he just scent checked some scrapes near the feeder. Before she could trade the binoculars for her gun, he faded into the thicket.
2nd Buck: So we went back to the same stand this evening. We saw a four pointer, and a three pointer. About 5:00 pm this eight pointer came in, and she made the decision to take him. I explained to her, this would limit her out on bucks, she said this buck would be a trophy to her. So she took her time, and when she had the right shot, she took it. He ran down the fence line, crashed into a fence. We got down, and when we got to where he crashed, we saw a buck standing near the fence line, he jumped the fence but didn't fly out of there. We figured this was her buck, and it was wounded. I had her to replay the shot in her head, and tell me where she hit him. She said, just behind the left shoulder, when we skinned him out, it was one inch behind the left shoulder, perfect shot. So we backed out, gave him an hour and came back. We found her buck lying about 30 feet from where he crashed into the fence. The buck we saw jump the fence wasn't even her buck. I explained to her on the way home, that she couldn't kill any more bucks this year, it would be does only. She cried, and said does than mean she can't go hunting with me anymore. I told her of course not, but she was a nannie hunter for the rest of this year.
