I went to Atlantic Beach this weekend for an offshore trip that didn't happen because of high winds. I can count on one hand how many times I have fished from a pier but Saturday evening I grabbed a rod and headed to the Bouge Inlet pier. When I got there everyone was on the left side of the pier catching spot. I took a spot on the right side thinking I had it all to my self. I watched people pull in fish two at at time while I didn't get a bite. 30 minutes later I squeezed in the on the left and started catching too. Why will they not go under a pier to the other side or go around? Its the funniest thing I ever saw. Got a five gallon bucket full in a couple of hours and put some in the cooler of the guy beside me for giving me room. The only time I ate spot was when you fixed them at the Wylie social a few years back. I'm going to cook some tonight and I hope they turn out as good. thanks.

Just get him on, then we'll worry about getting him in!
Yeah, I saw several people that would lean a couple rods on each side of them so they would not be crowded. Kind of pissed me off when they told me they belonged to their friends and they were coming back, but 2 hours later they were still leaning there, One guy was real nice though and let me sqeeze in. I gave him a good fourth of what I caught and he was grateful, he even loaned me a heavier weight. Thanks for the reply, Pete is a regular pier fisherman so that is why I threw that question his way. I just thought it was funny that they could be caught straight down and as far left as you could throw but you could not catch near as many on the right side.

its just one of those things i dont have an answer to myself......im sure some go under, and others go around. ive seen schools of pogies running down the suds, then all of a sudden see the pier, and make a turn out and go around the pier......why i donno? kings do the same.....ive watched em with water being so clear sky on a bait in the suds heading towards the pier....he sees the pier and rounds it......eventually pounding on a bait out there making a fatal error :D
if at first you dont succeed............drink another beer
Gotta go.......FISH ON !!
I only fish on days that end in"Y"
I wonder if they dont like it because the current gets them all discombobulated because of the pilings and easy target for predators...even though Ive never seen somebody say 'hey drop your pin rig/fish finder rig in the pilings, the kings/drum are in there waiting to ambush bait' ..............although I have heard of one instance where a bait was put into the water and a king promptly came screaming out from under the T after it....cudas will hang out under a pier sometimes tho...sheepies as well.
I think Treed hit it. Evolution hadn't got them this far to be easy pickings under structure. Was at Long Beach way back when and had the same happen to me and my party. Couldn't catch a dadburn thing on one side and catching them like flies on the other. Love November pier fishing, it's like Old Milwaukee...it just don't get no better than this.
