Thank you Uncle Murl for giving your life for our country! I never got to meet you because you died serving in War before I was born. But I have heard alot of great thinks about you over the years how you sent money home to help Grandma and Grand dad feed the family. I carry your first name as my middle name with pride.

In other news, this was something my daughter wrote for school. I thought it was awesome!


The real question is, “When isn’t it the right time to honor our military heroes?” There is never a time when we shouldn’t be honoring them. They put their lives in danger to protect us, our families, and this country! Why wouldn’t we honor them all day, everyday?

Sergeant Michael Lockett is a great example of a military hero. He won the Military Cross for rescuing wounded comrades and trying to retrieve the body of a colleague trapped in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan. He attempted repeatedly during that September night in 2007 to recover the body of Private Johan Botha. Because of his determination not to leave Private Botha behind, a wild gunfight with the Taliban broke out. But on that Monday, Lockett was killed by a roadside bomb. He was a real military hero. Those are the type of people we should be honoring every day.

And we do honor our military heroes like Lockett. One way we honor our military is at local events. I recently went to a St. Louis Rams game. At halftime there was a man who served in the Navy. We all stood up to honor him and all the rest of the troops fighting for us. At that moment, there was more applause then any play the whole game! That really shows that Americans care about our military.

I’m not saying that we honor our military all the time; we don’t. We still put up our flags, we still sing the National Anthem and state the Pledge of Allegiance, but I don’t believe we honor or consider the military near enough. We should have more days of remembrance of our military, and teachers should teach us more about the war in which we’re fighting. We do honor our troops a lot, but don’t you think we should do more besides just remembering? We should make cards and letters of appreciation. We should comfort the families that have a family member overseas. We should give to those who lost a loved one due to the war. We should honor our troops every day. They risk their lives for us! What a great country this is that we don’t force men and women to serve, that they fight for us out of the greatness of their heart. That is why I think we should honor them every day of the year!
