    Default Smithville Crappie Die Off

Anyone heard of the Crappie die off going on right now at Smithville. They say it is only affecting the Black Crappie. The black Crappie population is in transisition from a stunted, older population to a younger, faster growing population. Mostly the Larger older ones. The outbreak is called Columnaris Flexibacter bacteria.

No fisherman will get sick from eating any of the fish in Smithville with this. They will have lesions on there gills is how they tell the problem.

They say its pretty ripe at the boat ramps with 1000's of dead Crappie floating around.

Jake Allman has a letter out. I will try and post it here in a few. Iam having issues with getting it done on this site.

Krazy can you post it up? Lee

I fished Smithville this weekend and saw a lot of dead black crappie mostly small 5 to 8 inches all over the lake. I wondered what that was about.

I wonder if, in a sick way, it isn't good for a killoff in the lake. The population was getting overcrowded with fish. It is bad for the fish that are dieing, but if it is a natural occurance then its is nature thinning the herd
