I have noticed that smell too-all my life.
The crappie I caught today were on a definite pre-spawn pattern. 4-8 fow. Flood stage levels at 67 degree water temp. Almost every time I netted a fish I noticed a definitive pungent, musky odor. It was similar to the bream bed smell I know a lot of you are familiar with. Has anyone else noticed this or should I change deodorant?

Don't know about when they are in the net but my fishing partner swears he can smell them when they're "about to bite"

THERE IS DEFINITE A SMELL . I THINK IT IS WHEN A LOT CONGREGATE TOGETHER . SIMILAR TO A BREAM BED . IT IS HARDER TO FIND THAN A BREAM ESPECIALLY IN THIS WIND . I SMELT IT YESTERDAY . TO ME IT IS A SWEET SMELL .
CATCH THEM ALL.
I know exactly what you are talking about Ken. This was a similar strong odor coming off each fish itself. I generally net a fish and dislodge the hook while holding the net across my lap. These fish had a strong odor, just wandering if this is some kind of pheromones the fish put out at spawning time. When many fish are concentrated together maybe we can then smell them above the water.
