Default Boat Repair- Need help quick!!

I own a 16ft "Big Jon", it is a big wide boat. For some reason the manufact. put a 8" wide 6' long piece of wood as support on the inside of the transom. It rotted and I had to drill out the rivets and pull the wood out. What type of wood needs to go back in? I couldn't tell what came out of it becasue it was so rotten. Secondly, would you recommend me putting rivets back in or just put stainless steel screws with rubber washers and a hint of silicone? I have heard people say marine grade plywood, glued together to proper thickness and then finished with a resin but how long would a treated 2x8, painted, last? The 2x8 would be quicka and easy, being how I need to complete this project during this week!!! Help....Quick! Thanks to you all,:D

sounds like you have it worked out, I'd go with the 2x and bolts/silicon, motor on, then hit the lake. good luck.

    Default transom repair

Use the treated plywood. the 3/4" screwed together and sealed. It will give you more strength.

You say the treated, are you talking about the marine grade plywood or just treated plywood? Adn how do you recommend sealing the wood?

Marine Grade Plywood is a better grade of ply and has less voids than just 3/4" treated plywood.

For transom work treated plywood would be fine because the support is over a larger area.

If you use screws you can always remove and replace it easier.

I appreciate all of the help! I think I am going to use 2 cuts of 3/4 plywood, screwed together and then cover with a fiberglass resin. To mount everything I am going to use stainless steel screws, rubber washers and silicone. On the backside of the transom, I removed a 14" square piece of 1/4" wood that was rotted, which I am going to relace with a 14" x 1/2" sheet of aluminum. then i am going fishing!!!
