Im new to Mississippi, originally from Tenn. I wanted to fish Lake Lamar Bruce but the water was way down. I noticed alot of great structure both natural and man-made. Due to all of the crappie hotels and other man-made structure I couldnt help but think this is a good lake for crappie. I have heard they are plentiful but small. I would appreciate any comments or help on the best methods to use on this piece of water, where to fish etc... Is the water level controlled or just rises the old fashioned way with rain. Thanks!!!
Lamar Bruce is probably the closest body of water of any size to me,
(I live West of Booneville) but I hardly ever fish it.
But to the best of my limited experiences with it, you are hearing right
about the size and quantity. All I have ever caught there are black crappie,
sort of unusual for this area. Most lakes around here are a mix, with whites
being quite a bit more plentiful. It seems they are moodier and like smaller
baits than the whites I am used to dealing with. Once, several years ago,
I had two good consecutive trips there, caught limits both times trolling
small jigs. Went back a couple of more times, and couldn't catch a thing![]()
So I like Bay Springs and Pickwick betterTippah Co. lake has been good
at times, but last time I checked this winter, water was too low to launch
a boat unless you could drag it to the water by hand. Davis Lake down on
the Natchez Trace South of Pontotoc used to be good too, but haven't been
there in years. Trace State Park can be great at times too. I believe all the state park lakes are drawn down in the winter to some degree, and will fill back up by Spring from rain. Jeff
Shoals Area Crappie Association
Tghanks for the response. A guy told me the same as what your telling me. I just cant help but think there are some good slabs in this lake. Im going to give it some tries. Ill also try bay springs too. take care thanks. Jeff
jasmax, You may want to try for some bream in Lake LAmar Bruce,if you like bream fishing. I fished ther several years ago & we side trolled in about 10 ft water with crickets & split shots to keep them deep. We caught some of the biggest bream I have ever caught. This lake is better known for bream fishing than crappie.![]()
The Fraz
Hey there FRAZ thanks for the info. This site is impressive ive been reading it for quite some time and just started to post. A friend at work told me he caught numerous of the largest bream he had ever caught while on Lamar Bruce fishing crickets in 10-14 ft. One went, I believe he said 2 and 1/8. Thats a nice bream huh? I think hes shootin it straight!!! Cant help much about lakes around here yet but getting ready to post some interesting info on red hooks and a technique we found last year that were tremendously successfull. Later and thanks!!
HI. I live in aberdeen, about 35 minutes south of tupelo. If you want, I could take you out on the tenn tom waterway down here sometime.
