Hello all. I'm new to the site but recognize some names from other MS hunting/fishing forums.
I have been trying my green 4 ft. light bars in Sardis with no cooperation from the crappie. I went out Tuesday night and had a 60ft wide x 10ft deep bait fish ball that was amazing. We ended up catching 12 cats and had about 30 hits on the poles with catfish slime on the hook after most of those hits.
We were set up like drift fishing with minnows + jigs, just minnows, and just jigs with a weight at the bottom. We tried all different depths and lots of jig colors with the same result of catfish. We have fished in and outside the direct light.
I have tried a few different places (on different nights), 2 that I had caught crappie at that day. The bait fish were there every time In mass but all we managed were a few cats.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to catch the crappie?
There are a few folk around here that have been experimenting with night fishing methods. Don't give up, I'm sure one of them will chime in here soon.
for Stripers over by the Intake. I thought he was joking with me but he was serious about putting lights out to draw shad which brings in the stripers

jb, I would think that drift fishing would not be the way to do it. Everthing I've ever heard is that the light has to be on for an hour or more before the fish show up. If you have a specific spot, say a drop off or a brush pile that is productive for you, I'd try anchoring over the top of it and giving it a shot for a couple of hours using the same set up you've got.
Only night/light fishing I ever did was from Graysport bridge (don't tell Don...or anybody for that matter) for schooling stripes/whites. Jigged spoons on the outside of the light. Just like clockwork, 60 minutes after the light was flipped on, the fish would show up.

Wannabe,
I should have described my setup a little better. I set my poles up like I am drift fishing. I use 2 anchors to hold in the same spot. We have been fishing in water 30 - 20 foot deep beside channels and over structure mostly.
Well, it should be working then. Truth is, I'm not much help on the subject. Matter of fact, come to think of it, not many subjects I am. LOL.
I keep saying I'm gonna try it, but just never have gotten around to it. Mind keeping us posted on your efforts?

we set up just out from lay downs along a steep shoreline. like where the river channel cuts in towards shore and trees fall in. drop down a submersible light like the Fishing Lights, L.E.D.s lights, Submersible lights on sale
and sit back and fish. if crappies are around they will begin feed on the baitfish you draw in with the light.
give me road runners or give me death!

A lot of the guys on the S.C. and Ga. forum fish at night under lights. They usually have helpful advice when it comes to lights and night fishing. It works, or it did for me on Columbus and Aberdeen lakes a few years back, but you have to pick your spots.
Usually this time of year I set up either in the mouths of coves or just off a point where it drops off into deeper water. I give the light 30 minutes to draw in the baitfish....if no baitfish in 30 minutes, I move to another spot.
