Default Evinrude Problem

I have a 1992 60hp evinrude. The VRO pump went out and I replaced it and motor is doing the same thing. Initial crank up fine and I can run anywhere I want. I shut off engine and fish for a while motor will not start. I can push a valve that looks like a tire valve and it will start. Brother says its a fuel solenoid and checks out good. Anyone ever run into this?

I'm no mechanic, but that kind of sounds like vapor lock where the fuel vaporizes from the heat of the outboard in the Carb bowls and makes for hard starts after it's warmed up/hot. Not sure what the fix is other than maybe a new water pump to keep the heat down. Have you noticed it being worse on hot days or on up into the day?

It has never done it until the temps rose. It will crank cold all day long but after you make a 5 minute run somewhere and cut it off it will only start if you depress that valve.

Again, I ain't no mechanic, but your symptoms remind me of everything I've heard about vapor lock. Take a look at these. Sounds pretty much like your deal, but I didn't read any real solutions, only suggestions.

Did you install an electric fuel pump? from what I kave been told that fixes most fuel feed problems. That what my 200 has.

I had a 25hp Mercury that was doing the same thing. The fuel filter had a hair line crack in at that was just big enough to suck air and kill the motor. Once it quit, I could not get it started until it sat for a couple of hours. Got it fixed and had no further problems. May be something you want to check. Hope this helps....

What is this valve that you said you open and it runs fine? Is it a compression relief valve.

the tire valve is on the fuel solenoid. If it will not start I can depress that valve and it will start right up. My brother said that solenoid shoots a small amount of gas to help with the start.

So it's a shrader type valve then? Sounds like the valve they put on newer motors so you can shoot it with fogging oil. If so, that goes right to the carbs and by depressing it, you must be releasing pressure from the fuel system from vapor lock. You sure you've got good water pressure? Can the fuel line be held off from the motor any better? Any dirt buildup that's retaining heat - especially if you have any air vents on the cowling. You did say the bulb is tight when this happens right? If you haven't done it yet, replace the fuel filter just for good measure. Might be an air leak of some kind an that's cheap, easy and probably already over due. Past that, I'd be looking at fuel lines - another cheap and easy.

That's all I've got. Sad when I'm giving motor advice. Really sad. Surely somebody here's got something better to offer than me.

this valve has a red lever you can switch to manual position and it will shoot gas in by squeezing the bulb. You have to turn the valve back to the run position and it will crank. Something is causing fuel not to flow when engine is hot and water pump is shooting a strong stream guess I could change the impeller and see if its heat related.
