Default Newbie to West Metro area

I'm a Texan who's fairly new to MN. Looks like ice out is on the horizon, and I'm getting the fever! I'm used to the spawn habits down south, and have heard different stories for up here in MN. Once the ice is gone, do they typically come shallow immediately, or are you looking for the magical water temp as it is down south? Thanks!

Here in Michigan right after ice out can be some of the best fishing of the year. Look for shallow canals or shallow, dark bottomed flats and you should find fish. If the flats are on the north shore and have cabbage, all the better. These areas will warm up first and attract bait fish and the crappie, bluegill and bass will follow. I usually use a crappie minnow on a #10 treble under a bobber or a 1/16 oz jig with plastic under a bobber. Wax worms or red worms on a # 10 gold aberdeen hook works good for the gills. In Mn., there is a shallow feeding movement in the smaller, darker, protected canals on sunny days after ice out.
Has been best for me in the mid to late afternoon, as the water has had all day to warm.
(This is way earlier than the actual spawn.) Slow and small is the ticket and they are typically 'in' for only
    short periods of time.
West metro used to be my 'stompin' grounds ...
    A man's gotta believe in somethin' - I believe I'll go fishin'

    Mine too!
Altho this cold snap has put a stop to iceout.
Around the Coon rapids dam, and the dam in Anoka on the Rum river this time of the year was always hot, for fishing the eddies...I haven't fished that since the 80's. One would have to check it out, I heard they redid the park around thecoon rapids dam and fenced off a bunch of it
320 Driver, if you ever get to the East metro, look me up Ialways have an open seat on my boat...If your up for some river fishin
