So last night was the first time the kid & I got to go Firearm Deer hunting in 5 years, due to his service in the Military.
Amid some laughter and jokes about flame ignition from the heater to a certain persons rear end...........
Well it’s a surprise if we were to see anything at all......
Immeasurably due to the power of Pollack, after this above post, and pressing “send”, I looked to my left, and what do I see, a Doe.
I look to my right and what do I see? My kids face buried in his phone, playing Dragon Ball Z.
Quick tap on his nugget, and a point to the left.
After some head bobbing like an owl, he saw them.......
As he slowly reached for the shotgun she was on a slowed down hurried walk. She passed within 15 yards, trailed by a smaller deer.
So he gets the barrel cleared of the mesh net, and I’m watching, and THEN, I reach over my Son (He will always be little to me for some reason I guess) and check the safety.
Why, you ask? Well he is left handed, using my Right handed Remington 870.
And I along with the deer hear the response of.......”Dad, I know what I’m doing, leave the hell alone..........”
Dad: “Ok, just checking the Safety, you are ready, now shoot.........”
By that time, the deer were looking at the Blind, and a shot was squeezed off.
She was hit, and started to circle, but then went towards the river, and down the river bank she went, but we never saw her come up the other side for a follow up shot if needed.
So we got out of the blind, started walking over and I said “There she goes” & the kid was ready to shoot something again, as she was floating down stream..............
We were done, some fatherly advice on shots so they run the proper direction. Cuz at my age it’s better to have them run towards the truck, not float down the river, and lots of eye rolling from the kid.
She got caught in a log jam, and we grabbed some rope, walked down to the nearest bridge, crossed over, walked up to where she was at, got a rope around her.
Threw the slack back across the river, walked back around and pulled her over and up the river bank.
He got a nice 135# field dressed Doe.
I could tell it had been awhile, he would not stop talking, and was full of hunter bull crap the rest of the night.
After 4 long years, as a parent of some one who was on two Battle Tours, one in Afghanistan, one In Iraq, even though he has been home,
It was good to see and be “Home” with him.

We are planning on going out again tonight.
I will try and not be so much a “”Dad”” and not check the Safety for him........... lol

Our safety is the finger. Which one you get is up to you! Choose words carefully.
I might reverse it and take the old man out tonight despite the head cold. He has been stuck in the gar hole for days. Besides, I let Brian shoot one the other night. Only fair to put him on one.
I'm a bow hunter, so it is luck if I even load my gun. I'll wait for December

Little Thornapple.
It’s usually not that high, but with the rain, well it was about 5 foot where the deer was located.
With all the rain, the water was/is up about 4.5 foot.

Rylee is still not up, so I charged him a small ammo fee in tie form of 4 Boneless Ribs for my breakfast.......
Some times it’s just good to be Dad.

Cochran road north of Charlotte?
My friend Tom fished that stretch of river for northern one year and he kept a tally of how many he caught.....I don’t remember the number but it was a bunch. He probably caught some over and over as he released everything he caught
