Vacation ideas
Hello,
My wife surprised me and said that she would like to go to Michigan/rent a cabin/on a lake/13 yr old son/take our golden retriever/end of july/cooler weather. Anyone have any ideas on a nice quiet lake/clean cabin not too far from some good places to eat. This would be more of a relaxing vacation than a fishing vacation but I would like to fish some
. I have a 4 hp motor for a rental boat or we could take float tube/kickboat type boats. I have two of those. I would really like to stay away from the jetski type place. Thanks for any ideas!

Tom,
Good luck finding a lake in Michigan that doesn't have the Jet ski type environment. There are a few but they get harder and harder to come by. For good lakes and decent cabins try Mason or Oceana county. It is north of Muskegon. You have two good towns close by (Pentwater, and Ludington) that offer good local shopping and places to eat. There are a ton of lakes in this area and most of them have cabins to rent. In mason county the biggest lake would be Hamlin. Jet skis won't bother you too much as it is a realativly large lake. You also have St. Mary's lake, and Hackert lake (just to name a few). A little bit to the east in Lake county you have Wolf Lake. My suggestion is to pick a county and go on the michigan.gov/dnr websight. There you will be able to find all the lakes in any given county. I hope this helps.

Try this link...
to a place that we stayed at years ago. I know for a fact that five or so years ago the owner that I knew retired and sold to a new owner. From the website it looks like it's been kept up nicely.
The cabins are up on a bluff over looking Tippy Pond, which is a man-made impoundment with a small hydroelectric generation dam. We have been going up to Tippy for years camping and it's a gorgeous place. I don't know how many acres the impounment is, but it's big. I gets it's water from two rivers, the Manistee, and the Pine. It's owned by Consumers Power, but managed by the Michigan Forest Service. Not a private cabin on the lake as far as I have seen.
The resort has a nice little marina at the waters edge and you can rent boats with or without motors. I think you can even rent a small pontoon too.
Anyway, it's the only place that meets your requirements that I can speak of first hand. Good luck and have a great time wherever you go.

Thanks for the help everyone. I found some cabins on lakes in the Alpena area. Looks like a interesting place. Anyone ever visited this area. One of the lakes/cabins was Fletchers Pond.
