I've never done it, but it shouldn't be that hard. If you are going to weld a piece in to extend the length you need to be pretty handy with a welder. If that's not the case you might consider finding a section that will slide on over your existing tongue(just big enough to slide over it). Make this section three feet or so longer than you want to extend, to allow your existing tongue ends to slide inside for strength. This would take some(most) of the weight off the welds. Welds will still have to be able to endure the forward/back pressures.

How about cut off the existing hitch and install a swing tongue, looks like a pretty neat deal to me but cost might be too much.

I've done it because I had an accident and had to cut off 2 feet of the tongue. I just found a piece of square tubbing that I had to pound over the existing tube and drilled 6 bolt holes with bolts that went through both pieces of tubing and the trailer has been good for the last 10 years.

Why do you need to extend teh tongue?

There are numerous ways to skin this cat. Several have been mentioned.
