Thread: warning sound ?

just bought a 89 bass tracker never had it in the water got carb or fuel pump promblem after i mess with it a while a warning sound goes off from the switch area does anybody know what this is telling me except the thing wont run

... that warning buzzer is either from the "low oil" sensor (if motor is oil injected) ... or motor is "overheating" .

If it's peeing water out in a good stream, I'd wonder if the sensor is going bad. You do have a "flush muff" on the motor, or have the lower unit in a trashcan full of water ... I hope !! If not, and you keep trying to start it or let it run for a bit ... it's definitely overheating.

I'm no marine mechanic, so take my words at face value ... it's just what I've been told, or heard. I'd wait for some more opinions, and from more experienced members that know more about these things before I'd mess with it any further.

It might also help to know what motor brand, year, HP, etc. that we're talking about. And how it's acting (to make you think it's carb/fuel pump related).

Also ... if it has a kill switch system - make sure it's connected up and works. Had a friend whose outboard wouldn't start, & he couldn't figure out why .. since it had been running fine. Marine mechanic friend of ours came & took a look at it, and couldn't find anything wrong with the motor. You should have seen the look on my friends face, when the mechanic friend finally realized that the kill switch wasn't fastened on

hey pappy thanks for the reply it came factory oil injected but its been plugged since that itself might cause it ive got muffs on it plus it dont run for a long period of time so its not over heating its a 70 hp evinrude

hey wayne, sometimes when folks pull the oilers off they forget to remove the trigger wire for the low oil alarm. might be your problem if everything else seems ok.

If its an overheat alarm it will sound a steady sound. If its low oil, the sound will be intermittant.

Something a mechanic told me about the warning buzzer was that when you first turn on the key the buzzer will sound then go off and that if you do turn the key on and you don't hear the buzzer it is telling you something very important. It is telling you the buzzer warning system is not working properly and it won't be warning you if a over heating or low oil situation should occur.

If you don't hear the buzzer on initially turning the key on you should be getting things checked out.

On my boat, when you turn the key, but dont crank, it will go down a set of four alarms with the main being low oil and high temp.

these sensors and thermostats can go bad. If you believe the motor is not running hot and is getting oil, check these sensors

what kinda rigs are yall running? i have had several boats and different motors. I have never had one that has a " buzzer with key on engine off"
my yamaha 150 that i have now doesnt either.... should i be for getting it checked? do you know if its supposed to have one? 88 model yamaha 150.

Not all motors have them. I believe OMC and Merc started using that type system when they came out with the VRO (variable rate oiler). I don't have any Yamaha manuals to look it up for you. Check with The Marine Doctor. Perhaps he can tell you.

Yamaha dont have the beep when you turn it on.
