Thread: Honda 4 Stroke Trouble

Just bought a used (2004) honda 4 stroke. It's the devil to crank. Once you do get it cranked it will fire up every time even if its been a while since you cranked it. Any ideas what I'm doin wrong. Thought I might be floodin it but now I'm wonderin if I'm not chokin it enough. Thanks.

I don't know what size Honda you have, but I had a 2002 50HP carbed motor. It did like the choke when cold, and you had to wean it off the choke once it started. Other than that, it was a sweet motor!

Yeah, my 98 model 50 liked the choke when it was cold, particularly
in the later years I had it.
I started hitting the starter button with one hand, let it get spinning over,
and then pull out the choke knob till it hit, then push half way back in -
ready to pull back out if it tried to die.

Thanks ya'll I'll give it a try. Never had a 4 stroke and I know most motors have their little quircks. It sure is nice and quite when it finally does fire up.

If you're not seeing fuel on the water, you're probably needing some more 'choke.' At any rate, you have a nice, quiet, reliable motor despite it's starting routine.
