Thread: Got a rusty bolt?

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts.
Significant results!

*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. *

Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
None ............ ......... 516 pounds
WD-40 ............ ...... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............ . 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of
50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.*

My father-in-law swore by ATF and kerosene mixed. I use that for most stuff. I wonder how much different that is from the acetone?

I would never have thought the home brew would out-perform the old stand-bys!

We use the Kano/Kroil at work.

that Acetone is some dangerious stuff, it will self ignite if not disposed of correctly.

About 50-60 Years Ago,i Was Taught To Use Oil Of Wintergreen To Loosen Rusty Bolts.
Apply With Eye Dropper,a Few Drops Will Suffice,(not More Is Better).
Always Had A Bottle In Tool Box While In The Service.

Do Not Know How It Works,but It Does.

It is hard to believe that WD 40 will out perform PB Blaster. I buy it by the case. Use it on the farm and it is wonderful.

The PB Blaster was slightly better than WD 40.

I too was surprised PB Blaster was didn't do better than it did.
WD-40 stands for Water Displacing- 40 attempt.
It was not designed as a lubricant, but as a protective coating to prevent rust. Hence Water Displacing.

I use PB Blaster, Cant find Kroil around here.
