I need help on my Johnson 9.9 electric start, Motor runs great, but there is a lead or cable that is broken, about 6 inches long that I'm not sure what it does. It's exterior of the motor on the right side facing the motor that is connected to the exh housing and appears to go to the Sterring Bracket??? it's broken on the I think from the Sterring bracket .. What is it's function??
You need to move this to the Mechanics corner. Can you get a picture of the plug?? I is probably a control plug...I have seen small motors run with controls with a console or stick steering rig. A picture would be great. Where does it go under the cowling?? What color....how big?? How many prongs and such?? Need a bit more information. But if it runs as it should just see where it goes...it may just be spliced in and you can remove it completely if your using your tiller steer. Post a pic that would help the most! :D

Reread what you wrote....do you mean it is bolted or attached to the exhaust housing?? If so it could be a ground cable. Many times outboard have these that attach everything together for ground....good possibility.

Probably a ground wire.

I fully agree with that , Ground idea that's what it appears to me too. I guess it can be attached to any part of the Sterring Bracket as where it shows on the print it's very hard to put back to normal . But that said what does it ground far??? I've own this motor new in 96 .
The ground may actually not a ground "as such" It probably attaches everything together so your anodes will work to act against corrosion. Thats one of those overlooked things...the little fin on the lower unit and normally a couple places on the midsection are anodes. These will look like bare metal...and should never be painted over.
