I've just bought a 95 Starcraft Superfisherman 190 project boat. It needs all the carpeting replaced due to being left to the weather for 5 years. Anyhow I need some advise on carpeting the gunnels. For those who have done it, did you run the carpet straight up the gunnel edge from stern to bow, leaving a triangular cut off where the gunnel turns in to the pointy end? Or when the gunnel starts to turn in, did you bend the carpet around with the curve of the bow? The carpet will have to fold down and cover the side of the gunnel also, I'm guessing I'll be using about 14 or 15 inches of carpet. I'm going to carpet the interior sides, rod boxes, consoles and such, but I think I'll going to go with truck bed liner for the decks. Thanks, Ron
There is a product out called Gator Hide that is a ruvver coating that is used on decks. Non shid surface. Cabelas has a product under another name that does the same thing. I am going to use it on my litle boat. Look at it , you might like it.
I checked out Gator Hyde. Looks like it's for spray on application only. I'm looking for something to roll on.
BPS sells a roll on type non skid. I used it in my last boat and I really liked it. Be sure prep the surface really well and prime it with the suggested primer. It's really easy to do.
I am not sure about gator hyde but i know the Cabelas brand is a roll on. I think Gator hyde is also. If it can be sprayed it can be rolled.
I installed rug in about everything there is at one time or another. Did residential and commercial for 4 yrs. I think you're asking if a relief cut was needed to make the curve towards the bow? Not being exactly clear I can tell you the nature of the material. If it is stretched, it will return to it's original shape at some point. Use a carpet layers razor knife and cut from the back side only or you will remove nap of the carpet and leave a visible trench that will never hide. Patience is the best thing, think it thru a couple of times to make sure your cut will be right. If I had a choice i would cut the bottom of the piece and leave the top continuous cause that's where the most contact will be. Leaning over the gunnels and such will rub a seam apart. Wish you were closer, it would take no time to do. Use weldwood contact cement for your glue, brush it on and use it wet for more forgiving work time. A small can of solvent for errant glue is probably a good idea.
