How often do you have to change out the water impeller in an outboard. I have a 2007 50 HP mercury 2-stroke. I have noticed significantly less tell tail pressure over the last few months. Is it any different to change out the merc as compared to a older Johnson. I changed 1 out back in the 90's myself and wonder if I should attempt it again.

I just changed mime in a 2003 75hp it was very easy.
according to some of the boat mechanics i know they say to replace the water pump (impeller) about every three years i don,t know if this is correct but it is pretty cheap insurance if you do the work yourself

Just my two cents but I change mine every other year. I run only old Iron (evinrudes) that are over 35 years old. It takes me about 30 minutes and cost about $15. Cheap insureance for a cool engine. Check the T/stat at the same time if your motor has one it is a little more expensive but they are good for about 5 years.
