87 Force 9.9
Hey guys, I just fixed the recoil pull start on my 9.9 that I just got. I saw where I could buy a new spool assembly and a new spring assembly all total about $125 from Nicks Marine. Now I'm not afraid to spend a little, but I love to try and "engineer" a fix. I don't always succeed, but I believe this time I did.
When I got the motor, No rope was visible so I took out the whole starter recoil, spring, spool and all. Then came on here and found way back in 2007 someone had received a spring that wasn't the correct one for them. But this one was exactly like mine and gave me a closeup of what it was supposed to look like new.
I repaired mine by using a 1/8 rivet. I slid off the rivet off the stud and cut it to length to be the clamp that held the spring tight against the stop that locked onto the shaft to be wound up. Then seeing that nothing was there to wind the spring up with I used a 12d nail/galvanized and put it through the hole of the bottom mount (perfect fit) cut it off to exact length and press fit another steel rivet (3/16" with out the stud) against the other side of the mounting hole and tapped lightly to snug it tight. and HURRAY! it works. everything is holding together. I have yanked the rope dozens of times with flywheel removed, so far it holds. Now gotta get a new flywheel key and put that all back together. Noticed the guy I bought it from broke the ceramic off a spark plug, so have to get one and then put it in a tank and see if it'll start. May need to pull carb off and clean it, but for $40 dollars, this may be the best deal I've ever come up with.
