Thread: Lost reverse 25 Hp Merc , 2001 yr model

Change out the water pump on my mercury. It pumps fine and has forward and neutral no reverse.

Had reverse before I worked on it.

Can anyone tell me what I might have done wrong ?

i know exactly whats wrong

when you pulled off your lower unit you lost a washer that goes on your shift shaft , it should rest on the cotter pin on the shift shaft. if you need more help pm me your number and i can talk you through it

also make sure the rubber boot that on top of the water pump goes around the water tube when your sliding it all back together

It sure is nice to have an engineer for a son....told him what you said

He dropped the foot and re-installed per your suggestions...and it works.
