Default johnson 50 lower unit needs rebuild

have an 05 Johnson 50 that I am pretty sure has teeth broken off of gears. I did find an aftermarket kit to rebuild unit, but are there special tools that I need to do this? A puller wouldn't be a problem but I was wondering about setting up clearances and backlash. Anyone have any suggestions?

You may need a special tool to remove outer nut inside cone that holds it all in, then you will need 1 if not 2 good dial indicators to set clearances. Hopefully you can get a good Manuel that walks through the rebuild process or watch a bunch of YouTube videos.

I have dial indicators and plan on ordering a manual tomorrow. Not a lot of videos on assembling.

If you have the indicators, a 0-1 micrometer and the Manuel you should be good to go. Check that nut holding it together behind prom. Some are made where you can use a socket designed for removing the nuts on 4 wheel drive front bearings to remove and install it.

Aftermarket gear set quality is not the problem you face. To set that up correctly will require special tools in order to set the pinion to the proper height before backlash will be of importance. Otherwise, the gears will either be contacting on the heel or toe of the teeth. Your best bet would be to find a good used lower. If you want to have that one repaired, I would suggest locating an OMC tech with 20 or more years experience.
    I'd rather be fishing.
