I read alot about Crappies loving shade. But it seems like I'm catching more in deeper open water (away from the banks), than in shady areas. The shady areas seem to be in the shallows. Is this just a summer pattern I'm on, or is the Crappie not really bothered by sunlight?
Maybe some underwater structure they are holding on and if deep enough the sun will not get to them so much. Of course it will depend on how clear or stained your water is too.
If there is grass deep enough for them to get in that is a good spot too. They love hanging out in and around the grass beds. I know this lake lost much of is Hydrilla beds a few years back and changed everything. Hope it make a faster comeback that it is so far. We use to have Hydrilla in this lake in 20' or more of water and coming all the way up to the surface in the summer.
If there is standing timber they will be most of the time on the shady side of the tree in the summer when the sun is up and bright.
