    Question Crappie Movement 101

Ok. Last weekend was 2 weeks after ice out here in Ohio and some decent temps. Caught a lot of nice crappie shallow. 6ft. of water 4 ft. down. Few days ago temps were mid 40's with strong winds. Went back today. No crappie. After the ice out bite cools a bit, what happens before they move in shallow again. Or will they continue to visit shallow areas before spawn time. This is where I need help. Fill in the middle

    Ice out: Great fishing

    fill in the blank: _______________

    Spawn/prespawn: Hopefully great fishing.

Just trying to learn there pattern because before I really never started fishing for them till pretty much prespawn/spawn. Thanks for any help.

I am not completely familiar with crappie behavior in northern latitudes, however, one thing will certainly hold true -- the crappie are looking for warm water (relatively speaking of course) and will continue to do so until the spawn is complete. They run in on a warm up but will back out on a slow down or cool down. But rest assured they will be back and are constantly looking for the warmer water to spawn.

I pretty much agree with Darryl, stable weather is the key. I've found that the northern side of lakes are a good place to start...for two reasons..first the position of the sun allows for the sun to stay on that bank better....not as much shade...and secondly warm south breezes will push warmer surface water onto the north shoreline. but to answer your question ..yes they will move back and forth from deeper edges to shallows as the weather dictates...until the water is ready for spawning..then they will stay put more,,,but still will move in and out depending on fronts and sun/light penetration.IMO

Thanks guys. That clears it up. They are always looking to find warmer water to spawn until it it warm enough. So they may go thru this in and out for a month. Weather here is very unpredictable. On day it was 80 which is very warm this time of year, next day it was 35 at night with a high of 45.
