18 MPH winds tomorrow afternoon, probably not the best to try this.

First try was fun but did not catch a fish. Worked around in 10 - 12 ft water. I had my poles about 1 ft up from the water. I was using a 3/4 egg sinker with split shot to hold it. I had tube jigs and tried some minnows. I did have a couple bites but no takers. I did get snagged a bunch, lost my whole rig jig and sinker.

Wondering if you guys are using something different than egg sinker ?

I also was using a Bobby Garland body but the jig I put in on did not seem right, this is the first time I have used Garland body. Is there a certain type of jig you should use. It looked like the body was to close to the hook to get a hook set.

    thanks for any help

I use egg sinkers with a split shot also. You might want to try different speeds this time of year. If your speed is around .81-.92 you might want to adjust your depth , the faster you go with that weight the higher your bait will ride up , so you might be out of the strike zone. You might want to add weight at that speed. Don't be afraid to change baits , sometimes you can add a minnow with the jig , sometimes they only want they jig or just a minnow. With the fish in a post spawn mode there not as of aggressive for a couple weeks. I use Charlie brewer sliders and Bobby garland baits , make sure you use different colors until you find out what they want. Watch your speed

When Pushing jigs, I've used 1/2oz - 1.5oz depending on speed. I adjust weight in accordance with speed so that my lines are trailing the rod tips at about a 45deg angle. That way I can tell how deep my weight/jig are running. I simply let out a known amount of line, subtract the length from rod tip to water, then multiply remaining length by 0.6 -- that gives me the approx. depth of my weight & the jig should only be a few inches deeper if at all. But then I'm not Spider Rigging, either. At Spider Rigging speeds, I doubt the type of sinker being used would matter all that much.

As far as the BG body not fitting (or seeming to fit) the jighead being used .... that's one reason I had jigheads custom made with a #2 Aberdeen hook (on 1/32 & 1/16oz jigs) for my jig casting purposes. Like you, I felt that the hook point was too close to the body of the plastics I was using at the time & would not allow much space for a good hookup. I had some experiences where the plastics balled up on the hook & didn't allow good penetration of the hook point ... now, that was worm fishing for Bass, but the principal is the same.

Remember .... a Crappie's mouth is huge, and even a 6" Crappie can get a 2/0 hook in its mouth very easily, so use a hook size that leaves a decent gap between the body section of the plastics & the hook point.

I use an 1/2 oz egg sinker that I cast with a split shot stopper most of the time. I have doubled up on 1/2 oz egg sinkers in heavy wind. I loose very little gear if I go slow even though I'm fishing some gnarly cover. Several times this year I tried alternating rods with minnows and jigs in the rod holder. For me the minnows caught about 90% of the fish. I use plastic when casting and never minnows but with spider rigging it seems minnows is what works for me. I need to figure out plastics on the spider rig to save some money. So in the plastics department I'm right there with you.

You're going for either a reaction bite or a bite where they eat the jig/minnow for food. With a reaction bite you zoom by their head with the bait and they eat it out of reaction. When doing this I call it pushing/power trolling. I use a 1 ounce weight all of the time two jigs with the bottom jig being a curly tail. Loop knot for the jig above the weight then go through the weight three times with the line and a loop knot to the jig on the bottom. When you catch them good you can turn around and go trough them this way with out as MANY tangled up gobs of poles.

When you are going for the other bite finding the crappie first is key to that I think. You may be moving through them but usually not near as fast as when you are power trolling. I call this spider rgging/slow trolling.

I am not the best at this and I only fish for fat dumb fish so I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info, I bought some more jig heads today for the Bobby Garland baits. I bought the jig heads they sell, they were pricey but I can tell a major difference on the gap for hook. I think the crappie should be spawning soon, might revert back to casting to shore with a jig and then fall back on spider rigging after the spawn.

Very good read, and good information as well.
'Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
The blind see and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed and deaf hear; dead are raised up and poor have the gospel preached to them.
And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me... Matthew 11:4-6
