Default Which reel do you prefer for your spider rig rods??

About to invest in either (4) ACC crappie sticks or southern crappie rods and trying to figure out what reel I wanna run. Always been the spinning reel kinda guy but I have read some good stuff about either the bait caster style or drop seated kind. I’m new to the spider rig deal so any info
    Is welcome.

I have used both. When I bought my own rods and reels for spider rigging I bought spinning reels for the price. No I want to replace them because it is easier, to me, to let out line to change depth. Try both and go with what you like best.

Hello: I have used both but I also prefer bait casting reels. I get bait casting reels that have a flipping switch so I can let line out and not have to turn the crank handle to engage the reel . Good Luck O - R

Low profile bait cast reels with a thumb bar is what I use on my 14' rods.

What I didn't already have on hand, from my Bass fishing days, I purchased from Locator79 in the Personal Classifieds.

Never got into "flippin/pitchin" with a baitcast reel, so the flippin switch was never a factor in choosing a reel. Got so used to the thumb bar that transitioning it over to the long rods was easy to me. Lot of people want all the rods/reels to be matching sets, but I've become so used to baitcast & spinning equipment that I can switch from one to the other with no impediment. In fact, out of the 30 some odd rod/reel combos I have ... there are only about 3 rods that have a twin, but even then none of them have the same reel on them as the other one.

If I was just going to Spider Rig .... I'd probably consider using the Shimano IX series reels. But, I mostly push jigs & cranks with the long rods, and already had usable baitcast reels, so I just went with them.

I started out with the mini baitcaster reels and they worked pretty good, especially for the price.Last year I got some low profile baitcasters and they are working out well, much easier to let out line ,plus they have a much better drag. The only downside of the bigger baitcaster are they are larger then the mini reels and even though I got cheaper low profile reels, they still cost twice as much as the mini reels.

Thanks fellas. My only concern about the bait caster style is I have never “thrown” one. I saw that in the sense of actually casting one for bass or whatever. Last time I tried I was a kid and that turned out to be a mess haha. With it being on jig poles, is there as much issue with backlashes and such? Seems to me like you would just let out the desired amount and lock the reel back in vs having to actually throw it and worrying about spool control and bird nesting it. That’s why I was interested in the drop seated reels like I was seeing Ed Duke use on one of his vids. I like the concept of direct open spooling vs a spinner where it wraps it.

When using baitcasters spider rigging you are not casting the baits. It's just a line holder and the benefit of the bait caster over a spinning reel is the thumb bar line release, you can let the line out more easily to work the fish into the net or boat.

You wont be throwing or casting so in my opinion there is no reason for a spinning or bait casting reel, but I will say I started with cheap spinning reels, then a couple years ago switched to Ed's (Sc) drop seat reels, there are 3 reasons I like them first they are compact and 4 poles lay nicely on the deck of my tracker, secondly the price 12$ well worth the gamble and thirdly for a 12$ reel the drag is pretty good. The only draw back I see with a drop seat reel is being able to quickly land the fish before it tangles your other lines, I discovered this last month in Florida 2 lb fish like to dart left to right it seems. Obtw welcome to Cdc

I have used both started with mini-bait caster type, now switched to mini-spinning reels. I found it more cost effective to use the mini-spinning reels. I got a good buy on them from ebay and love the mini size, small and fits in the palm of your hand. Light and not bulky at all, works exceptionally well with Spider Rigging.
