The Caney Fork River in eastern middle TN. A great trout fishery but is also full of black nose crappie....which many overlook.

Were you just below the Center Hill Lake dam ??

I'm thinking you were, and those Blacknose came thru the dam from Center Hill Lake ... also a clear water, Blacknose Crappie haven.

Are the Brookies stocked, carryovers, or natives?

You are correct Pappy. As for them coming through the dam that is my theory also. But those spill gates have not been open in years. I figure that when they were open the population became established there and has flourished. I got out of kayaking 3 years back. But I would float down the river and fish the deep holes during periods of no generation.....those black nose would be stacked in those hole. No one else at that time did that......and I don’t think many do it now.....everyone is after trout.

It is my understanding from TWRA that no trout truly spawn in the Caney.....they just go through the motion. But all of them hold over....no native trout. Some of the Brookies we caught today were stockers and some were carryovers. We didn’t really get any of our best Brookies...several 13-14 inches. When it is absolute mayhem you just want to make another cast....LOL. Come February I will be concentrating on the crappie. All the crappie in that river come to the Pond to spawn...imagine that. There can be lots of folks vying for what they think are the only spots.....but in reality very few fish where I caught those crappie today.

    Regards

Thank you! You’ve sold me on a trip, probably February or March! I love that area, so it is an easy sell!
