Looks like a banded water snake. If it is, they are harmless.

That's what I think also. Copperheads have more of an hourglass bands.

I didn't see this one until I was nearly finished tying up to the end of the branch he was on.

That one is a water snake. Look how slender his tail is. A water moccasin's tail looks like someone cut it off and left a stump.

Almost all poisonous snake bites occur from trying to handle them. They fear you bigtime and if given the opportunity they will run .....even the real bad boys in snakes ain't looking for trouble ...western diamond rattlers back have terrible tempers and will run like a rabbit if you give em space ....the snakes posted here are just water snakes best I can tell but to sure true cottonmouths come in a variety of colors and can be identified incorrectly very easily ....younger ones have patterns similar to copperheads in many cases but darker .....

I'm no snake expert. Actually I'm colorblind so have a very difficult time telling one snake from another. I was recently watching a show, Lonestar Law I think, where a young man killed a rattle snake and posted a pic on a popular social media website. It happened to be a timber rattlesnake that is a protected species. The young man was ticketed and fined. So, don't post pics of your snake kills unless you are sure of what you killed.

I've had several cotton mouths turn to fight and even pursue me a few feet if I backed up. I guess they felt threatened, I know I did. At this point in my life, all snakes get a pass except poisonous ones on or close to my property, however I've found that they are like armadillos- kill one today and two will replace him tomorrow!
