i have a story to share, last march during late ice season when lake is still good enough to drive on, i was fishing shallow flat with still good weeds/cabbages and had already drilled over 150-200 holes last 2 days i had fishing the same spot, on that day i drilled i think another 50 more near break line as two older guy in their 60s, they stopped in middle of my swiss cheese field and yet they just drilled a couple hole for themselves and sight fishing old fashion way without vexiliar and/or underwater video.

i was really doing good on slabs as i already had 6 10-12" in bucket, one older guy walked about 75 yards to where i was and he asked me how its going and etc, told him about the spots and all holes i drilled last 2 days. he was like "i apologize if i am rude but can i fish one of your hole??????"......

i was stunned and told him sure sure go ahead.. as he turned around to walk away and i stopped him and point at my bucket as i want him to have the fish i had in bucket, he took them without resist and god blessed me... i never forget that day.. i never EVER have people come to me and asked me if they can fish in hole i drilled, as i normally have people pulled up several yards away from me and start fishing holes, granted its public lake but they never attempted to make conversation with me...

i have helped several old guys load up their boat and give away fish to people that doesn't have much of luck as i do but that day will always stick with me.. its really nice to see old fashions ways of fishing for those slabs crusining the shallow flats....hopefully i will get to see them again and absolutely will help them out with catching fish or what so.

    this thread is great!!!

I gave some crappie to my dad's neighbor, Mr. Bobby, last week. Dad and I always fish together and Mr. Bobby fished often with his friend and neighbor on the other side of his house, Mr. Barry. Even though I'm in my 40's and they were in their 80's, I always put the "Mister" in front of their names. These men were either together fishing or hunting or sitting on the porch side by side, often. They were very close friends. Sadly, Barry died back in February and Bobby now sits by himself on the porch.

Dad has stopped and visited with him and he says his fishing days are over. We drove slowly by his house one morning last week with the boat hooked up and stopped to see if he wanted to go with us, but he refused. We caught a few, maybe 10 or so, and gave them to him that afternoon........already filleted of course.

He seemed really glad to get those fish and said that he HAD to do something for us in return. He just had to. He went in the house and came out with an ice cream bucket of figs that he had just picked from behind his house. We don't like figs, but accepted them thankfully. I made one phone call and gave the figs to my friend's mother, who is also in her 80's and pretty much home bound. She had been wanting some fresh figs........

I like doing for others like that. Seems that lots of people now EXPECT something free, instead of doing for others first and letting good things happen in return.

    I like this thread. GTT

Wow ya'll know how to make a grown man shed some tears by just reading these post.

A few years ago my best friend and I went on our annual fishing trip to Lake West Point Georgia. We try and go every spring during the spawn and stay on the same camp site every year. On our first day we did great and came back to our camp site early for a good reason. AT this certain site the crappie always spawn right off the bank and they are always big slabs. When we got back to the site we noticed there was people at the double site just beside us.m I looked down on the bank and noticed these campers beside us was fishing from the bank. What cought my attention was if I remember correctly 3 kids and 3 adults. Well my partner and I was doing good catching some slabs and I noticed one of the older kids watching us. My partner and I quit fishing and went over and struck up a conversation with this family. After talking to the dad of the kids I got very emtional. He told me that they always came down from Alabama to fish that timew of the year and the whole family would enjoy the trip. This particlar year was a very sad one for all of them tho. See, the family was this man's wife and 3 kids and the kids grandparents. He told me that their grandmother had passed away just a couple months before this trip. Their granddad was able to make the trip tho. This young dad told me that his oldest kid was I think around 12 and he dearly loved his grandma and really missed her. Well, I asked the dad if it was ok if I rigged up a rod and reel and gave it to his son and he said yes. After rigging this rod and reel I asked the kid to come over to where we were fishing and I showed him a few tips. On his first cast he cought a decent crappie and his face really lit up. I told him "Son, you can consider this your rod and reel now so keep on fishing and if you need any help my friend and I will help ya.
I talked to this kids dad once again and he told me that they are a Gospel singing group and they go all over the place singing in church's and other places. He said they had made a few CD's and he would be glad to send me a CD. Well just before my friend and I left to come home we went over to their site and said our good byes and this kid comes over aaand hugged me and said GOD Bless you sir and thank you so much for the rod and reel. As I returned to our site I was already shedding tears. ABout 2 weeks after we got back home I recieved a package in the mail. It was thank you letter and 2 brad new CD's of this family gospel group. It was the kid that had sent this to me and the letter was a little long but the main thing that still is with me is what he said about his grandma. He said I am sure my grandma thanks you also for being so nice.
After reading these post tonight I am now bound and determined to find this family again.

It isn't the big things we do that make such a difference, but the small things that are never forgotten. Some of do as we were taught and others do what we're told. Some call it conscience. I don't.
