Even though I have a huge livewell I still put them on ice. Much easier to clean

I've used stringers, fish baskets, live wells and ice chests. I prefer live wells and carry them back in coolers on ice to filet unless I'm fileting them there. Sometimes, though, it just gets too hot and then I just put them in the cooler on ice. The chilled fish seem to filet better.

However, if you are scaling them, gutting them and heading them, it is much easier if they are still alive. If I was doing that, I think I'd try to add a little ice to the livewell in real hot weather to keep them alive, but not freeze and kill them.
