I apreciate all the advice. I dont think I was hooking them in the V. That is the probably the reason they wont stay on good.
I heard rumor of an old fella hooked his in the tail...and trolled. He said the fish wanted to eat shad head first, so if they were following, they would have him lined out correctly. I asked what happened if you run head on into a fish and the minnow was coming at him backwards...I didn't get an answer.
make sure your jig head hook is large enough..i make my own jig heads...i get the exact hook i want from Barlows...i prefer a long shaft hook..i make 1/32 or 1/16 oz...heads...works best for most areas...if i need extra weight i use a split shot or bell weight...
I use mostly thru the lips. Sometimes especially when still or ice fishing I like to ron hook parallell to spine.
Take point of hook pierce in back and off to side behind the dorsal fin. Bring the point back out so the point of hook is close to head. hook up are more positive with this method. Sometimes the little difference will trigger the crappie to strike.
The minnow quivers more than swims as the hook impairs the swimming motion. I prefer this hook style when crappie are picky.
