The customer service at our OKC BPS is less than impressive and their prices are on the higher end. They lost their new shiny appeal for me when I got more interested in other types of fishing. There is just SO much bass fishing junk, and it is so commercialized .... "oooh, KVD uses this color.." "oh look, Bill Dance signed his name on this one..." Much of the staff that i've talked to wasn't knowledgeable, and the ones that seemed like they were, weren't too friendly. Long and short of it, i go to BPS occasionally, but not unless i really need something.

I stopped at the BPS in Nashville one time, picked up over $800.00 worth of fishing and hunting items. I took the time to write down all the items and sale prices off the Internet and was only getting the things on sale. When I got to the cash register and the employee was ringing the items up. I saw that the prices where not the sale price that I had got off the Internet. I told the employee that on the Internet the price was lower and on sale. He said the Nashville BPS had nothing to do with the Internet store. That if I wanted the Internet price, I had to bring the Internet add in too get the price. I told him I did not know that. I though they where the same store. He never slowed down ringing up my order. It came to just over 1100.00 dollars. I showed him my paper that I had took the time to write down all the items and sale price was just over 800.00. He said he could not match the Internet prices without the add. I ask him could he not just go on the Internet and check the price. He said know it did not work that way. I told him I understand know problem!!! Then turn and started walking out the door. The employee said sir sir don't you want the items. I said no thanks! I will order from Cabela's. I went on the visit my family in Ky. When I got home I got all the info I needed and called Cabela's. Gave them my order and the total was a little less than BPS's Internet store. I told the lady on the phone the story of what went on with BPS and she said hold on. She came back and said we are going to ship your order for free. The total for my order was just under $800.00 and I got a $20.00 gift card in the box the order came in. So I am now a Cabela's customer now. And have told many people this story!
So save your money and buy from Cabela's!

We're an hour and a half away from BPS in Memphis and 3 hrs from the Nashville store, both of which I'm not overly impressed with. You walk in the front door and you're pounced on by the "Get a Bass Pro credit card" team. Once you make your way a little further back, you're then attacked by the "Book a trip to Big Cedar Lodge and other great destinations" squad. They all seem to have a problem with "No, thank you, I'm not interested."
I can drive less than an hour to Grizzly Jig and get everything I need because they cater to crappie folks. It's a plus that they are family owned and I get a hug every time I go! They have better prices than BPS and they carry quality stuff, too.

No store, local or otherwise, is all good or all bad. I see things decently priced at BPS many times. I buy local when they have something I want and the price is competitive. Often that means things the big boys just don't offer--split tails, small jigs on big hooks, etc. But I buy my 12' Wally Marshall Tightline from BPS, not because it's a better rod than any other, but because I get it on sale for $30, BPS replaces it no questions asked if it breaks, and I break alot of tips--usually because I've abused the rod. I had a reel that was at least 10 years old with a broken handle--it shouldn't have broke, but most stores wouldn't take any responsibility for that situation. To make it more complicated, it was part of a combo with a single price. BPS gave me a $25 credit which I immediately used to buy a new President spinning reel that cost $60. Many local guys couldn't afford to do that, even if they wanted to. Conclusion: both local and chains have their pluses and there's room for both given the internet and a local's ability to appeal to a much wider market than in the past.

I agree all stores have their good and bad points. That is why I do the research get what I need and get out.
