No, it is not wierd at all. "Vu" (or "Vũ" in Vietnamese language) is a quite popular Vietnamese last name (though not as popular as say "Nguyễn" or "Trần"!:-)

Well I know both a "Vu" and a "Nguyen"......actually there half brothers. But they are the only ones that I know. The only other place I have heard "Nguyen" before is on TV and never heard of another "Vu" before.
