Yep slower. When you see your lines slanting, let off the trolling motor and let the boat drift till they're straight, then just move forward a little at a time. I use 3/4 and 1 ounce weights, and I still get them slanted at times. Always troll into the wind.

For what we troll(minnow rigs mostly) .05 is breaking the speed limit, ...08 would be MACH3. LOL Slow going seems to be the best, .02-.04 is a good range, weights from 1/4-3/4 depending on wind.
However, if your trying to push troll crankbaits(i got a funny feeling you are!LOL), you'll need to double if not triple your weights, theres alot of drag on even a tiny crank, and it requires a lot of weight to keep it vertical, or even close. Lighter line helps to, cuts the water better, less drag. For the bitsy pond minnow i like, at .07 i need at least 1 ounce for vertical presentation in dead calm conditions. deeper you fish, more weight as well.
I wouldnt worry about your rodhoder set-up. Long as it holds the rods still, and you can somewhat adjust there postition, go with it. I like to keep the rod tips as close to the water as i can. Makes your depth set more accurate, and also alows you to decect light bites better, since the rod is closer to the water, and minor movement shows up well, a good hit takes the pole tip underwater, which is always cool! Rougher water, the higher from the surface you'll need them set.
Man i love slow trollin.

AH HA HA Hillbilly .......great guess on the crankbaits, but nope i have been trying to expanding my tatics. i have been trying to spider rig minners, and jigs. I have even made myself leave the crankbait box at home a few trips just so i can learn somthing new, man thats hard to do for me, i like my bandits :D i havent made it to the pushing cranks yet, some how i think i will though..... you know, honestly i think the speed problem comes from pulling cranks so much, .8 mph feels like i am sitting still, def not mach 3
, thanks for the input on the rod angles that will help me figure this out for sure.

thanks guys, will be out soon and will try to slow her down even more...great ideas on tapping the troller to go slow enough, hopefully by doing so i wont need to mess with my drift sock, one last question do any of you guys use a capps/coleman rig at these speeds? i have tried em but always got tangled up together, maybe once again a result of the speed? thanks all for the input, trying to learn a new method and am thankful for you guys willing to help out, God bless all

another thing to look at is the diameter of you line. The larger the diameter the more drag thru the water.![]()
Mr. Jim....please explain your whole rig set up with the 2 oz. weight........are you using a bell sinker or a egg sinker? where on your rig is your jig etc. Thanks.

I had a power drive TM on my last boat (a stick steer) and loved the speed control. I could get it moving so slow you could count the revolutions. TM now has set speeds and will be replaced when I can with a variable speed model. Bumping frustrates me, but I'm getting better at it.

Everyone's right on about going SLOW!!! I like using 1 oz. of weight on the bottom and tie one or two jigs up the line on loop knots about a foot apart, or either just bare hooks using minnows.![]()
