    Default Some questions..

Very new to this whole white perch business. Needing some advice. Bout to go spend a good bit of money on jigs and a few poles, and was wondering what you fellers think I need. If you were starting totally from scratch, what would you fellers go out and buy, just to get the basics. Advice on jig colors would help alot too!

I'll be fishing Darbonne Lake extensively.

Also, what techniques are mostly used during the late spring and summer months? Dock shooting, cork and a jig, etc.?

I've posted up before asking for help with Darbonne Lake specifically, so sorry if it's clogging up the system. lol. Just a young'un and not old enough to get my drivers license yet, so it's hard to get rolling on an operation like this. Wanting to get pretty serious with this though. Been fishing my pond every day for the past week or two and catching 6-7 perch a trip and having a blast.

Also, the reason I posted this here instead of the tackle forum is because I figured I would be needing different stuff for a lake that's in the south vs. a lake that was from up north. Knew I would be getting a bunch of different answers from people up north. Sorry if this is not where it belongs.

    Thanks!

HW, welcome to the world of white perch, aka crappie, fishing. There are about as many types of fishing gear, poles, baits, techniques in this sport as there are fishermen. Everyone prefers their own thing. I think if you had one jigging pole and one light spinning rig that would be all you'll need for now. Get an assortment of jig heads, jigs, and very small spinner baits and just start fishing til you figure out what you like best. For D'Arbonne this time of year most people will be fishing around the cypress trees in a couple feet of water (although right now they're also still being caught in deep water and in between).

Best thing you can do is drive over to the Honey Hole on North 7th Street in West Monroe and talk to Bobby Phillips or anyone who is there. They will fix you up with what you need and give you a lot of good pointers.

If you fish with a cork and jig I really like my micro-lite rod from bass pro shops. It is 7.5 feet long with ultralight action. I put a daiwa us40 underspin on it with 8lb test. This is the rig I use day in and day out. I found the best 8lb to use is the spidermono. It is really strong but has the diameter of 6lb test so it casts really easy. I also like hair jigs but I get them from a guy here locally. If you do a little digging you can prolly find some around your area. Also if you like to tightline for sac-a-lait microlite makes an 8'6" medium light action that has a little more backbone to it. Hope this helps. If you have questions ask. Good luck!:D
