    Default Christmas trees

Looking for info on how to rig up christmas trees to put out in a lake. Is it ok to put them out now while they are still green? How long should i wait to fish them.

A buddy of mine puts them out on Caney and he said that they have an oil in them when they are green and the fish don't come around them for a while. He said he usually puts them out for the next year and does pretty good on them. I've never used them and I'm just going by what he says. I personally use sycamores or pin oaks because they sink themselves and make good tops.

Christmas trees sink really good when they are still green. But you do have to wait about 4 to 5 months before the fish start hanging around them. I am not sure on bringing them out there except throw them in the boat...

Christmas trees are like cedars they have sap in them. I have sunk cedars and pulled fish off them the next day. They are going to the fresh cover because the minnows are going there too. Put the trees out after Xmas and start fishing them as soon as you can the fish will be there.

I have never had a ton of succes on christmas trees. I have put out several and i sink my christmas trees the next year and when i do i cut some of the branches out from the middle of the tree to make little holes so the crappi can hide. I think hard wood like scrub brush or oak limbs ar better, i feel the fish can get inside the branches easier and hide better. If you look at a christmas tree a big fish really can't get inside of it, the branches are to close. Just my thoughts good luck. Oh some one did tell me that if you put a christmas tree out while it is green, its best to tie a bad of dog food to it and put some cuts in it, this will atcract the minnows and then of course the big fish, like crappie and bass. I have never tried it. -Nathan

    Hey Josh,
Search Christmas trees on the Crappie structure form for some good advice like thinning the limbs and such. However they don't work very good for me either, I'm sorry to say. I've sunk almost everything you could imagine in my little 20 acre lake. Swing sets, BBQ pits, (all with tree limbs attached) and every type tree found in shreveport.

The abosulte best thing for me is a green, whole tree, anything but evergreen, about 12-16 foot tall sunk standing up. I tie a weight up a foot or two from the bottom to help the trunk sink into the mud and a foam filled jug tied to the top 1/3 of the top. In shallow water I suspend it just touching the bottom and sideways. Hard to beat! Don Stamper

What about leland cypress ? I have four leaning (after Gustav) that have to come down. They are about 16' tall. Plan on putting them in the bayou behind my house.

The cypress sunk in the bayou will outlast your grandkids as long as they don't get covered in sediment.
