Thread: Start tying my on crappie jigs

I'm on a peak rotary now. I really like it, it's a good midrange vise as far as price goes.

You can get a starter kit at Cabelas or Bass Pro for around $50.00. It will have everything you need except material to get you started. Then if you like it, you can always upgrade to a better vise. After more than 2 years, I am still using the one that came in the kit. However, I only tie jigs for myself and some to give away from time to time, so I don't use it a lot.

I bought the cheapest vice Bass Pro had, then bought a few individual items to make my own kit. I bought good bobbins. I figured if I stuck with it, I would buy a higher quality vice later. I've tied a pile of jigs with that cheap vice. It's not as nice as a good rotary vice, but is better than spending a bunch of money to find out you don't use it as much as you thought you would. I haven't tied any jigs in a year, but that's only because I tied enough to last two years. The thing I like best is I can make a jig I've never seen before. I was goofing around one night, experimenting with twisting different chanilles, mixing different color buck tails, etc. I was trying to come up with a hair jig in Cajun Cricket colors. I tied two that looked nothing like any plastic Cajun Cricket jig I'd ever seen, but the fish LOVE them! Pure accident, but I have plenty in my box now. Nothing like catching a mess of fish on your own jigs.

I can only suggest that you use glue through each step . That way the jig stays together while fishing with them. Big Crappie can tear up jigs

H/H Spinner you might want to try Cabelas. I purchased the cheapest vise that Cabelas had but now they are out of stock in Gonzales but you can order it online for like $15.00 (Cabelas Super AA Vise). I've used it for about 2 years and like some of the other guys, I have tried to tie a few jigs over those 2 years and it's still going strong.
