Default OT- Help me Trouble shoot my Trolling Motor

I am having fits with my trolling motor.

First let me tell yall what happend. Me and a buddy werefishin for "green carp"

on cypress this morning. We caught 5-6 by 8 o clock. Oh and 1 big black male crappie rite up against a bank on a senko!!

Any how i was on the north end trolling through those lilly stems and i lost ALL POWER to the trollin motor.

    My check list:

Brand new batteries ( 4 days old)

12v/24v Toggle switch on front panel ( 1 day old)

Toggle switch in foot of trollin motor ( bought back in Oct)

    No fuses were broke

The breaker was tripped, but when i clicked back in, i still got nothing...

    I am totally stumped....

    Any help would be appreciated.

it is a 67lb thrust motor guide.1999 model

I'd use a voltmeter or a test light and check to make sure your getting voltage to the trolling motor.

My buddy has a voltmeter that he said i could use.

    So what if either

    A. i find that there is voltage getting to the trolling motor

    B. there is no voltage.

what is are my possible issues then?

well if you are getting voltage to the motor and it still isn't working it is something inside the troller

if there is no power to the troller then it is somewhere between where you checked it and the power source.

in a deal like this you have to trouble shoot in halves. instead of just shooting ideas at it you narrow the problem to a half then narrowing that half by half every time you are eliminating 50% of the problem.

you also mention you just added switches and breakers and stuff like this i would double check your work as well. make sure it is still hooked up properly.(that is if you find you are not getting power to the troller)

When looking at a problem like this i would ask myself what is new and what has changed.

You have a few things going on which is you installed new hardware.

then the troller went out while on the water.

were you running the troller non stop? (could of burned the motor up)

did you get anything wrapped around the troller and still kept trying to move it without removing the imbedded object? (could burn your motor up)

is there a short in your wiring job you just did. ( tripped your breaker maybe the breaker was to big and it burned the motor first then tripped it)

is the power button in the on position on the foot part of the controller(if it is a foot controlled troller)

these are a few things I would consider before just tearing something apart.

Does it still not work now that the breaker has cooled? Were you running on high?

unplug your motor, check your voltage at the plugin, got 12 or 24 according to what your running all is good to there. if not check the fuse in the battery bay may look good but may be blown. If u have the proper voltage at the plug, ohm between gnd and your power wire if there is anything other than OL you basically have a gnd fault. Also u can check the motor windings with the ohm meter to see that it is not open or shorted. Also I hate to say this but check that your switch is on, you would be surprised how oftern it is that simple. Overloads fail also so if you know how to use a meter it will be easy to find if not find someone who does.

Do a voltage drop test at the plug on the B+ and B-. Make sure you do this under load.

hey jared, call me and i will bring over my volt meter and we can figure this oiut. i have had a similar situation. like someone said we need to start by reducing it in halves. eventually we will find the problem.
