    Default Dumb Questions

    Hey guys,

I know this is going to sound dumb but I just bought my first boat today and I heard you guys saying stuff about trolling for crappie and spider rigs and that sort of stuff. I was just wondering how in the world I do that? What do you troll with? I'm sorry if this is a ridiculous question but I'm new to the crappie fishing and would like to learn the tricks of the trade. Thanks guys for all the help in advance.

    John

    hey chief,

i am not gonna pretend to know it all bout spiderrigging and trolling, but i do know a little. true spider rigging is when youhave rod racks in the boat that allow you to fish with 8+ rods at one time. i have a set up for 8 rods in the front of the boat, and 8 in the back of the boat. on each rod i put a 1oz weight at the bottom, and 2 hooks above the weight about 18-24 inches apart. on each hook i put a shiner. when you fish like this, youir boat looks like a giant spider on the water.

trolling is done kinda the same way. i fish 3 rods out each side of the boat. a 6 foot, a 9 foot and a 12 foot. and i troll with crankbaits. any crankbait that runs 10-12 feet normally is good. bandit makes one, so does bomber, so does wally marshall. and you just trhow them out and set youir trolling motor and go. about 1.2 mph is what i have found is best. sometimes you can put a weight about 4 feet above youir crankbait and then youi don't have to let as much line out and youi can control the depth of the bait much better. this is called "pushing" the crankbait.

here are some pics of my set up. this is the front of my boat.

holler if i can be of anymore help.

ok, first of all, there are no dumb questions. The members on this site fish in a variety of ways, so learning everyone's way may take you some time and questioning. One of the best article/explanations is in a post made by Fishin Magician a couple years ago. I think this will be very helpful to you along with what the other guys are saying.

    hey gator,

my rod holders are made by hi-tek stuff. the web site is Home

. the guy that makes them is named scott echols. the ones that i have are "custom" for lack of a better word. i wanted mine to come with 2 vertical poles per holder, not one. and mine have a slight bend in the bar that holds the rod holders. i love mine. they are very adjustable and easy to remove a rod quickly. if you are looking for a set, i would highly recommend mine. i also have a set for the back of the boat.

gator, i can remove all four of mine in about three minutes. they have a small set screw with a hex head. just loosen and remove. mine are a little harder, not much, to remove since they have two legs. the sets with just one leg can be removed in a few seconds. if you look at the pics i posted, you can see the rectangular "footprint". that is what mounts to the floor of the boat and that is all that is left when i remove the rod holders. the only thing i don't like about leaving my rod holders set up is that i cannot stow my trolling motor. but this would be a problem in my boat no matter what brand of spider riggers i bought. so i just pull up mo TM and and bungy strap it to my rod holders. they are stable enough to support my trolling motor.

check out the pic of my boat and i think you will see the silver rectangle that i screwed to the floor of my boat. you can still see shavings where i drilled ouit the hole.

another good thing about my set up is that every bolt in this system is a 1/2 inch hex head. i keep about three 1/2 wrenches in my boat at all times. this way if i need to remove them, or adjust them, i have a wrench handy no matter where in the boat i am. just a neat feature.
