Cold Snap
You guys think all of this freezing weather will help kill off the giant salvinia that's been wrecking havoc in the NWLA lakes? I think someone said it would die off in an extended freeze. Anyone know for sure? It'd be nice to have something positive from freezing my rear off! :D

Only if it freezes at least 1/2" inch my dad says here. Former LA aquatic plant control for LDWF.

I'll keep my fingers crossed then! Thanks for the info and welcome to the board.

I have been wondering the same thing since I have a camp at BBH. We might gt lucky up there and at least get some of it killed back. the people south of us wont be as lucky it looks like. I hope that they can up with some biological control soon

Yeah If we could have a a few days of weather that stays below freezing like Atlanta is about to get then you'd see a lot of it die off. Hope for another ice storm pretty much!

WHAT!!!
Come on, Austin, that's a pretty radical wish! Some of us fairly decent folks come from places where this sort of stuff doesn't happen but a few times in our lives, and we forget how to cope with it in between!
Yeah, I hate salvinia, and I've loved Bistineau since 1960! But I've loved a warm butt (Mine!) for a bit longer than that! And if my neighbor's tree falls under an ice-load and busts my power line, I'm gonna be cold! Really!
Please, no ice storms! Freezes - Yeah, well. Illegal immigrants - uh. Democrats running rampant - Dear Lord help us! Deep sac-a-lait - not this coon-a..! Just please let me survive past the goose season and live to see the azaleas bloom one more time - and the redears bed once again on Bistineau - without any ice storms beforehand! :D
Thank you very much!
Pete

I spoke to someone in Alberta Canada today. She told me they were in a warming spell, it was only 16 below. The week before Christmas it was 34 below. At 16 below she called it bikini weather. I told her it had better be a very furry one and over sized at that.

I went to my camp at Bistineau today to drain the water heater, etc.. The salvinia was definitely turning brown when there was no brown last week. The current is still moving towards the dam and salvinia is going with it. The gates are open again as the water is dropping pretty fast. I don't know if the top turning brown means that the plant is dead though. I am hoping that it gets cold enough, for long enough, to take care of it. Last year was almost unfishable on the south end.
For those of you interested in Bistineau check out the LDWF site at Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
It has some info, video, etc.
Take care,
Michael

I don't want severe weather but it might take it to kill some of this crap in our lakes. Only thing is it can spread again. Only way to stop contamination would be to spray off boats before going to another lake. Then again... What about birds? Guess they can transfer too.

Well I wonder if the cold has hurt the salvinia?
