Took a drive to East Texas yesterday to see if the high waters will allow us from NW LA to start fishing and it appears the answer is yes. The current in the River at Johnson's is pretty good but there are several areas of slack current at several turns that at least two fishermen had caught a nice mess. Some where caught in water as shallow as 3 feet. I didn't recognize the person in the store and she had no fishing information. She acted surprised that I asked! They have been working on the grounds, clearing cane breaks, under brush, repairing the restrooms, so the place looks much better that I've seen it in years. Maybe somebody bought it. I didn't see any burn piles so I'm betting there will be a lot of new brush tops along the river thanks to PeeWee. There were about 8 trucks with trailers there at 2 pm. I'm thinking Tuesday or Wed. I'll give 'em a try.
Lake O the Pines is still about 13 feet above pool. They are releasing 3000 CFM and its a site to behold while standing a few feet from the outlet. There are several ramps open in spite of what the COE web site says. You can launch at Big cypress marina, Alley Creek, and the COE ramp on the west side, South of the Highway 155 bridge. I have heard good reports from the north lake but have never done much good up there. Overlook launch is about 7-10 feet underwater along with most of the camping sites at Johnson Creek. The Rec. area on the West side of the dam are underwater also. I didn't see anyone fishing the open water in front of the dam in spite of large number of boat trailers at the ramps. There are two things to aim for in life: First, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieves the second. Author unknown, but I like it!
Thanks for the info Don, it's good to see you still around. Haven't heard from you in awhile.
You can't fish with a hung line!
