Went to Lake Mechant on Sunday for some saltwater action with a good friend of mine. Fished the area all day without any problems. We decided to go across the lake to try one last spot before we went home. Half way across the lake I started hearing a clicking noise, so I slowed down to investigate. When I rev'ed up the motor no noise, can you guess where I am going with this? We putted back to the launch and went home, pulled the lower unit and spun the input shaft and guess what we heard, clunk clunk clunk!!! I talked to several people this week and they all said I probably knock a tooth off one of the pinion gears. So I get our shop mechanic to help tear it down to find the problem. Then it gets better, every piece we try to remove BREAKS!! It's too corroded to take apart. Too much saltwater.
Long story short I need a new lower unit. A new one from Yamaha is $1600, a rebuilt unit is $900 plus a $200 core charge. So I will be armchair fishing until I can save up the money for a NEW lower unit.

Sorry to hear that.. I have always heard that when it rains, it pours... maybe check craigslist or ebay for a used one. You might even be able to find an older model motor cheap enough to hold you over til you fix yours then sell the old one
You can't fish with a hung line!
Ben, not good news at all. What HP and year model, I'll keep my ears open. I've only been out one time since we met and that was two weeks later. Hopefully, I get the roof fixed and the weather will cool so we can get out again. Maybe you and I can team up in my boat for a trip or two.

Its a 1993 70 hp Yamaha.
I have called a few places around town but they don't have any. The lady at Southern Outdoors in Thibodaux said they are like gold so they don't hold on to them very long.
Lets See If We Can Start A Cash For Clunkers In The Boating World
That's the best idea I've heard out of any political suggestion lately. We'd have less wake from 250hp motors and better fuel conservation which means more money that will be recycled back into the economy from us purchasing the life neccessities like crappie nibbles, bobby garlands, jig poles, jig tying supplies, etc.![]()
Trade in your old clunker 2 stroke for a 4 stroke!:D And no,we won't donate the old one to the less fortunate,we'll destroy it!![]()
