Went to Old River (Morganza) this morning. Caught 10 sac-a-lait, 4 bream, and 1 catfish. Caught them all by piers in 10-15 f.o.w. by 9 am. Probably threw back another 15. The fish moved out to the rafts when the water heated up but with all the people there, it was almost impossible to find a good one to fish.
The biggest. Weighed almost 3 lbs.

kinda suprised yall caught em considering the river is rising i think??? good catch....u caught them with the lure actually 10-15 feet deep or in water that deep?? do you just drop the bait straight down from the boat?? that how u do it?? im still new to sacalait fishing but if i ever get some time im gonna start learning...i fish in 2 old rivers a little further north of morganza, both river controlled but i normally just bass fish....do you locate the fish FIRST on depthfinder and then fish for em??
Congrats on the catch. Looks like plenty enough for a mess. Cool pics too.
You can't fish with a hung line!

Thanks for the replies. I caught them in 10-15 f.o.w. about 3-4 ft off the bottom. I simply jig with shiners next to piers in the shade. I let the bait go to the bottom and slowly jig up. Most of the time, the fish hit it before it gets to the bottom.
The Mississippi River is rising but it doesn't affect Old River when it is under the 15 ft stage in Baton Rouge.
The landing is in good shape. The only time it is hard to launch is when the water is real high. Black/chartreuse, white, blue/white jigs work well if you don't want to buy shiners. Crickets work the best for bream.
thanks for all the info. maybe I'll show my pics. tomorrow
like jigs over shinners

allright so in other words old river landlocks at 15 feet BR MS river? right?
There is a canal that runs to the MS River at the NE end of Old River that is damned off. The water over flows it when the MS River stage at Old River is 15 ft or higher.
