Default Lower Basin

Chip and I hit the lower basin this morning and fished some of the little bayous leading into Bayou Sorrell. He caught eleven beautiful sacs - I released two tiny ones, reaffirming my status as the world's worst in that category. However, I did get seven fine chinks, eight chunky gogs, and a few nice bluegills, all on lightly-weighted size 8 purple and chartreuse flies. Chip got his on black and green tubes. Mixing water around grassbeds was the pattern, fishing about two feet deep, though I got one nice chink and one of the mini-sacs on yellow sponge spiders (Floating flies).
Still "Slabless" but with some good skillet-material nevertheless! Saw an eagle, too. It was a good day.

Glad to hear that you two got to have tight lines. I was hoping to fish the basin this weekend but that has been put on hold, and next week end is out also as I lead 100 or so men on a retreat to Manresa on the river near Convent. By the way if anybody interested, I do have a few spots left, just PM me. I've never fished the basin except once 30 years ago and came home with only 2 fish, one small bass and one chink out of Bear Bayou. I've heard stories ever since when about the abundance of the fish there. Perhaps my time is coming soon to give it a sample and bring home the bacon or should I say the slabs. Thanks for sharing.

John, I am well aware of the effectiveness of tubes - I used 'em faithfully to slay sacs for years in some canals near Tidewater way down in the Delta. I just presently have a freezer full of speck and flounder fillets (Most acquired through flies) and am fishing flies for the helluva it - and to see if I can work up a pattern that produces. You know, a challenge. My flies ARE close - just need a little refining. I'll get it right directly.
Thanks, though, for the thought.
Pete

And Pawpaw -
If you put in at the Berwick launch, head upstream and pass under the bridges, and go upriver for a mile or so, a big cut on the right leads into Flat Lake. Cross that and the water clears nicely on the upper end. There Cane Bayou and Bear Bayou are a couple of the popular places to fish. The cypresses around the mouths of them are also reported to be good.
Have a fun trip, but be watchful of FAY - she's on the way!
Pete
