Default quail creek apartments

if any of yall live in shreveport area, yall probably know that these apartments have a little creek (or ditch) that runs behind the apartments. well, i heard the other day that this creek was chock full of shad, and they were easy to catch with a cast net. so................i went about two weeks ago and got my net ready and threw it out. this creek is only about 40 feeet wide. i threw right into the middle of it where it was about 6 feet deep. when i tried to pull my net in, i thought it was hung on a root on the bottom. but i perservered,a nd got it to the bank and i was dumfounded. it could not have been more full of little fish about 3 inches long. i just assumed that they were all shad, but when i tried to dump them into my bucket, i realized that i had at least 5000 baby crappie. i mean, i had enough to fill up at least 3 5gallon buckets. and not a shad in the net. i have never caught tahtmany fish in my cast net at one throw, but for them to be baby crappie, i was shocked. and that is an understatement. anyway--i don't think this many mouths can survive on the limited amount of food in this creek. but wouldn't be kinda cool if they did?????????

Kinda leaves you thinking too that where there's babies....there's parents

Not sure I'd eat them from there though, just because you never know what goes into the water around residential neighborhoods...

docwaldo,

I threw a cast net in our pond which only about a long cast across. I caught what I thought was a crappie and found out from a biologist from work that it was actually a fish called a flier. They are typically found in small bodies of water and never get much over six inches. I'm not saying that's what they are, but I sure was suprised when I found out it wasn't a crappie. I could tell the difference between them once I had both to compare. Again, I'm not saying that's what they are. I used to catch some nice bass behind Quail creek Apt. about ten years ago. No telling what they have in there. I'm with LouisianaFish Nut, I don't know if I'd eat em. Might be good for stocking another pond. Of course, legally I think you'd have to hook em with a line.

Hey Doc,

Grew up in Broadmoor, and back then the river would back-up during high water, flooding what we used to call Meyers lake. Now they call it Champion Lake. That "ditch" used to be a nice timbered slew behind where the apts. are now, used to take on excess water from Meyers and that may be where those came from. Man, we used to catch some fish back in there, Meyers, behind Hamel's Dairy, and from behind Money's place. I've shot many a wood duck off that slew, but that was when that area looked a lot wilder than it does today. You can thank the red river for those fingerlings. Next time the river gets into the banks, go down to "Champion Lake", and look at how the water backs up under road between the driving range and the lake. You'll understand the route from the river. Rivers flooded the last two springs. Can't imagine how many fish spawned back in the bushes. Sounds like you need to get permission to fish Champion. They've got a great ramp for all those ski boats. If you get a key, I've got the memories of where.

years ago we used to put yo-yo's in the creek you are talking about and cleaned up on the white perch.
