Talking Chicot Bream

Took my 2 sons bream fishing in Chicot yesterday morning and around noon today. The lake is still down about 2 feet judging by the watermark. We took out 19 blue gill, or as my Dad would have said 'Mason Bream'. As a kid the Masons in Shreveport would cook tons of bream on a regular basis. The fish were on the bank in about 2 foot of water we caught a few in 3 1/2 foot, all on cold worms with a green maggot. We had a ball till the clouds burned off and the heat went up. We called it a day and came home to a cool swimming pool.

Hey Big Daddy -
Fine catch. However, and not wanting to sound like a smart-a, according to Dr. Neil Douglas and quoted in his book, "Freshwater Fishes of Louisiana", "Mason bream" refer to redear sunfish, or "chinquapins" as some of us are prone to call them. Not that it really matters what we call 'em, just as long as they are called to supper.
Catch some more!
Pete

Don't feel too badly, Shooter, it happens to the best of us, and to some of us much more frequently than to others.
For instance, I'm sorta getting used to it.

SneakyPete

Your reference, Dr. Douglas obviously was never a member of the Shreveport Masonic Temple during the 60's.

Hey Big Daddy,
I used to go to a bunch of those same fish fry events myself. Had a cousin by the name of Lynn Pomeroy, who was a home builder. Dad and I provided a lot of those fish from Bistineau, and would often go with Lynn in return for providing fish. And you weren't kidding when you said "tons". Good times, and had forgotten about it till I read your post. Thanks for the memories.

Boatstall

That was a great time to grow up. I will never forget all the times I went home with a fishbone in my throat, afraid to say anything, because the cure was to swallow a cottonball on a string.
