Default Kinda OT - Eduardo Aftermath

Left Morgan City barely 24 hours after Eduardo made the beach. Two hours later we were 30 miles offshore and had yet to cut the first rip - only a little scattered sargasso in a very small area and some current lines that were too weak to bunch it up. Nothing like I thought the storm would have pushed north, and not a sign of a lemonfish or a tripletail. Stooped to speck-fishing around some of the platforms out there and barely caught enough to get a decent stink out of the grease! Very disappointing - and a cool $100 on gas!
Oh well...

Sounds like you had the right idea but mother nature had other plans. Oh well least you caught a couple for dinner.

How far out you usually have to go to get tripletail and cobia off the weeds?

Depends. When I lived in Buras we frequently found rips loaded with both of them 4 to 6 miles out of Tiger Pass in West Delta. Generally never had to go more than 10. Fly Fishing for them was great - ask Boatstall!
I don't know about over here (Fishing out of Morgan City and Burns Point). That was our first targeted trip, and I figured conditions would be just right for it. Couldn't believe that at 30 miles SSW of the mouth of the Atchafalaya we had not yet found anything fishable! Oh well...
I know they got 'em to the east, and I have seen 'em to the west, so they got to have 'em around here, too. Maybe they had gotten seasick from those heaving swells and weren't hungry. Whatever, we'll try it again - beats the hell out of not catching sac-a-lait!

Hey Markham, I agree with sneekypete. We usually don't catch any tripletail further out than about 10 to 12 miles. We should have made a trip that day you and riverfish ran out to the first rigs! I didn't even think about it then. Oh well maybe next time. If you ever get to try tripletail, you will NOT want any other kind of fish to eat! Yea, they are that good!

Shadow, if you are as right about everything else as you are about how good tripletail taste, then you ought to be running for president! They CANNOT be beat!

In Dallas for a couple of days, (5 actually=just shoot me now), but just wanted to say that if tripletail could be caught like sac-a-lait, this form would have to change it's name to tripletail.com. Man, what a hoot to spot and cast to, hook up and are like a bluegill on steroids. And that eating thing, ya'll are right on with that.

Sneaky, sorry your trip didn't set a new record, I just knew you had it timed right.......

Looking forward to returning to LOUISIANA. Man I hate this traffic.
