Default Basin Bustin Loose!!!

I'm visiting friends in sola and have seen first hand what high water this spring and summer has done to the Atchafalaya Basin. How bout a re-birth. The basin has needed the extended high water that it hasn't gotten for years. The restocking and spawn as well as a massive flush is what the basin needed and what used to happen year after year. The perfect eco system. The downside of sorts is that the hydralics aren't what they used to be because of siltation. At one time some money was available to dredge key arteries in the southern area of the basin from north of flat lake to grand lake. As usual it hasnt happened and huge areas here become "dead" when normal levels arrive. These areas used to have a constant flow which is vital for the fish if they are going to stay put. The water becomes septic and kills crawfish by the tons. Aside from that, limits of white perch are commonplace as well as the broad sholdered goggle-eye which were a mainstay during the good years. I have friends who have caught a white perch on a tube jig while a bass or goggle-eye slams the cork.....its that crazy in the southern part of the basin, at least until water levels go low and the flow stops in these areas. I'm going tom. (thurs) with hair jigs. Plastic gets torn up even the superglued. Fish points or corners with grass and moving water into it or around it 22-24 in below a small cork. I use the 1/48th oz jig head if I dont go with hair jigs. I'm learning that hair jigs are much more commom in nola than sola. I've never used them before until now. Kinda like the action in the water. So do the white perch.....I'll report on my trip tom night. JN
