Default Is a shad trawl legal in LA?????

Just came across an ad for nylon shad trawls from 2 1/2ft. to 3 1/2 ft. in dia. and 5 ft. long, with 35 ft. tow line. 1/4" or 3/8" mesh. Dipped or undipped?

Anybody got any experience with one?
Are they legal in LA. ?????

Thanks,
boatstall

Hey Boatstall!
Contact Seales in Minden at 318-371-3050. If he doesn't know, he should be able to point you in the right direction. As far as using one for mullet, shrimp, and so forth, I'd imagine that would be highly illegal.

I have one. I have not caught a shad with in. I have pulled that thing for miles. I am sure I do not know how to use it. There are what we call the bubbles at lake Murvaul where the shad stay in hot weather. I tried it there over and over again but it does not catch them. I know all the stuff about pulling it in circles, ect. You can catch them by the bucket full with a cast net but not the shad trawl. In the late evening, in the river the shad come to the top, in the river at times. I have zig zag that thing up and down the river, no shad. I am sure they are seeing it and getting out of the way of the net.

sneakypete,

I'm sure Minden or BR. can answer on Monday. Just thought if anybody had any info over the weekend, would go ahead and order one on-line and have it in by Tuesday. All these big catfish pictures and reports have given me the bug. May have to get the cast net out, but thought the trawl concept would maybe work behind the pontoon boat while en-route. thanks

Hey WhitePerchJerker,

Thanks for the input on the trawl. I saw these trawls in the catalog from The Fish Net Company, in Jonesville, La. 1-800-256-5256. Maybe a quick call to the guys that make them would give some clues as to why yours doesn't work the way you want it to. Hope you get it producing. Thanks again

Boatstall, why don't you come get this one and try it. I would be glad to let you use it. If you lose it don't worry about it. Come get it. I live outside of Tenaha. will PM you directions.

Once a fellow masters the art of throwing a cast net,,,,,,,,,he should have no problem this time of year on the bayou or river coming up with some bait....Another way to catch shad on area lakes is hang a lantern at night......ounce the shad start circling under the light ,,,,dip you up some...When night fish i have found that on some nights they prefer shad to shiners...Shad move fast when you go to dipping em,, but can improve your night catch.
