Why do my crawlers try to escape?
In year past I used to keep em in regular dirt and the mix you buy. This time I used peat moss.
They keep wanting to escaping. Too much dirt maybe? Its plenty damp with wet newspapers on top. They was hand picked a few days ago.
The first night I woke to crawlers. Alllll over my basement.

I have the same problem have two tubs one with red wigglers and the other euro night crawlers. picked up led light bulb and turn it on at night also cut cardboard to cover dirt. Problem solved
Nightcrawlers have a built in anxiety syndrome called,Four Corner Syndrome.Scientist in Sweden discovered nightcrawlers are descendants of the Pactoriousnatturoucas,( night venturers ),they were known to travel to the 4 corners of the earth.Their restlessness led them to search for non boundary lands, often driving them deeper underground,or higher into the mountains.
When the Pactoriousnatturoucas went into the earth, where the temps became to warm for reproduction, they began to die in mass numbers. Those that survived made their way back toward the earths surface, and through millions of years of breeding, the instinct of survival climbing has become forever imbedded into their offspring.
Swedish scientist also discovered the Four Corner Syndrome can be reversed by placing younger/ breeding age crawlers in a cornerless container, after two generations the new crawlers will be neurologically imprinted to circular travel, thus eliminating the once instinct driven desire to climb........Hope this helps
i have gathered them and placed in bucket with dirt and leaves from where collected . They will crawl out at night unless light source kept on .

I use 5 gallon buckets with peat moss, shredded paper and a few cups of dirt from the yard. I cut a hole in the lid and covered it with screen for airflow that way tgey cant crawl out even if they wanted to. Its been going for about 3 months now and they seem happy. From what i read as long as the conditions are right (food moisture etc) they'll stay. If the are trying to escape in large numbers then something is wrong
